China Urges U.S. to Honor New Trade Deal
This request came a day after Leader Donald Trump declared that a trade agreement with Beijing was “done.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian addressed the media in Beijing, stating, “Now that a consensus has been reached, both sides should abide by it.”
His remarks were a response to Trump’s assertion that China would provide full magnets and “any necessary” rare earths “up front.”
These statements followed the conclusion of two days of trade negotiations between Beijing and Washington, which took place in the United Kingdom and wrapped up late on Tuesday.
Commenting on the outcome of the London dialogue, Lin emphasized that the meeting occurred “under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state.”
According to him, both parties had achieved a basic agreement on the structure of actions needed to implement the “important consensus” from their June 5 phone call.
This progress also served to build on the outcomes of earlier economic and trade discussions in Geneva and brought further advancements in addressing each side’s commercial concerns.
Lin further expressed hope that the United States would cooperate with China to carry out the key points discussed by the two leaders.
He stressed the importance of utilizing the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation platform to broaden mutual understanding, limit misinterpretations, and bolster cooperation through continued communication and dialogue.
