India claims West having double standards on Ukraine, Pakistan
In an interview with Euractiv on Tuesday, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine war. “We don’t believe war will resolve differences or offer a viable solution,” he said, stressing that India chooses not to take sides, though it remains engaged in the situation. “We’re not prescribing solutions or being judgmental – but we are not detached either,” he added.
Jaishankar also questioned the West’s moral authority in global affairs, citing its historical support for Pakistan during its incursion into Kashmir just months after India gained independence. “When our borders were violated, the countries that supported that aggression were the very same Western nations now advocating global principles,” he said. “I think I’m justified in asking them to reflect on their past actions.”
The foreign minister also emphasized India’s balanced ties with both Russia and Ukraine, arguing that national histories and interests guide foreign policy decisions. His remarks come during a week-long trip to Europe, where he is discussing a potential free trade agreement with the EU.
The visit follows a recent trip to India by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, aimed at advancing trade talks. The EU has criticized India for not joining Western sanctions against Moscow. Despite global pressure, India remains one of the top importers of Russian oil.
