China Raises Concerns Over Japan’s Deployment to NATO Ukraine Mission

(MENAFN) China on Monday voiced concern over Japan’s decision to assign security personnel to a NATO mission connected to Ukraine, arguing that the move reflects a broader shift in Tokyo’s defense posture.

According to reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Japan has been steadily expanding its military activities, increasing cooperation with military organizations outside the region, broadening the responsibilities of its Self-Defense Forces and enhancing their operational capabilities.

“Japan has been pursuing remilitarization at full throttle, engaging in frequent interactions with a military organization from outside the region, expanding the scope of activities of its Self-Defence Forces (SDF), and building a combat-ready operational system,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

His remarks came in response to Japan’s announcement that four Self-Defense Force officers will be assigned to the NATO Security Assistance and Training Organization for Ukraine.

According to reports, Lin argued that the deployment represents an effort by Japan to move beyond long-standing legal and constitutional limitations that have traditionally shaped its defense policies.

“This is Japan trying to break free from the constraints of its Constitution, domestic and international laws, and its exclusively defense-oriented principle,” said Lin.

Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, NATO established the mission in Germany in 2024 to coordinate military assistance and training programs for Ukrainian forces.

China also warned that developments in Japan’s security policy could have wider implications for regional stability.

“The malevolent emergence of neo-militarism in Japan is putting regional peace and stability under threat. The international community must stay on high alert and take resolute countermeasures,” he said.

According to reports, Beijing called for close international attention to Japan’s evolving military role, expressing concern over what it views as a departure from the country’s traditional defense-oriented approach.
