Japanese Companies Face Major Customer Data Breaches After Cyberattacks
Monogatari Corp., which operates the Yakiniku King barbecue restaurant chain, said more than 10 million customers may have been affected after its reservation and loyalty application was accessed without authorization.
The exposed information reportedly includes customers’ names, email addresses, telephone numbers and membership identification numbers.
The company discovered the breach on Friday and said that, so far, it has not identified any evidence indicating that the compromised information was used improperly.
In a separate incident, Daiwa Securities Group disclosed that information associated with approximately 110,000 customers of its brokerage business may also have been accessed.
The incident involved a server managed by an external contractor. According to reports, the unauthorized access took place between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
The affected server was operated by Scala Communications Inc., a company that provides Daiwa Securities with an online system used to manage customer inquiries.
The incidents highlight the growing cybersecurity risks faced by companies handling large volumes of sensitive customer information, particularly through externally operated digital services and applications.
